James Hetfield began to write this song while he was on the phone with his girlfriend in 1990. "So close, no matter how far" shows the connection between two even though Hetfield was on tour. He actually wrote the song for himself, but Lars Ulrich like it after hearing, and it was included on the album.
James Hetfield plays the guitar solo on this song rather than Kirk Hammett. It is one of the few Metallica songs when Hetfield did so.
This song has an acoustic remix that is called the "elevator version" when electric guitars are replaced by acoustic guitars, and with James Hetfield's voice only.
Michael Kamen arranged the orchestration in this song. He conducted the San Francisco Symphony orchestra which was used to record the version of this song for Metallica's live album "S&M" (1999).
