Nyamira MCAs Photo with Arati Sparks Political Storm - Kenya Politics Explained (2025)

A political storm is brewing, and it all started with a seemingly innocent photo. But this is no ordinary snapshot; it's a glimpse into the complex world of Kenyan politics and the delicate balance of power.

The photo in question features three newly elected MCAs (Members of the County Assembly) from Nyamira, alongside prominent UDA leaders, taken in Nairobi. What's the big deal, you ask? Well, it's all about the context and the players involved.

These MCAs, Jackson Mogusu, Jeremiah Ongaro, and Chris Osiemo, are closely aligned with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i. After their victory in last week's by-elections, they met with Matiang'i in Karen, followed by a lunch with Governor Amos Nyaribo in Lavington.

But here's where it gets controversial...

During this lunch, they were joined by Kisii Governor Simba Arati, National Assembly Majority Leader Sylvanus Osoro, and UDA Treasurer Japhet Nyakundi. The photo was taken as a symbol of unity and goodwill after a tough campaign, with UDA putting up a fight in Matiang'i's stronghold.

The picture tells a story: it features two MPs, two governors, and two MCAs, with Nyamira CEC Jones Omwenga also in the frame.

Earlier, Governor Arati had invited Matiang'i's allies, including Senator Okong'o Omogeni and several MPs, to a meeting in his private office. However, the meeting didn't materialize as most leaders were engaged elsewhere.

The photo went viral after UDA leaders claimed the MCAs had joined a broad-based government. Dennis Itumbi, a UDA leader, wrote on Facebook, "The newly elected MCAs in Nyamira were, in fact, broad-based candidates. UPA is fully aligned with the broad-based setup, and Governor Nyaribo praised them for delivering a triumph."

But UPA National Chairman Nyambega Gisesa, who was present during the photo, denies any talk of his party joining the broad-based. He claims it was a courtesy meeting and a friendly lunch, nothing more.

On Wednesday, Nyaribo's team clarified that the photo was a simple gesture of goodwill and should not be misinterpreted as a political realignment. They firmly refute any claims suggesting a switch in political allegiance.

"Neither the Governor nor the MCAs have joined any 'broad-based arrangement' or political coalition. Such agreements are formal and legally binding, not decided over a friendly lunch and a photo."

And this is the part most people miss: politics is a delicate dance, and every move is scrutinized. This photo has sparked speculation and raised questions about the future of political alliances in Nyamira.

So, what do you think? Is this just a friendly gesture, or a sign of a shifting political landscape? The floor is open for discussion. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
